You definitely used 64-bit OS somewhere at home, office or on friends PC. 64-bit Chipsets are becoming popular knowadays. We also have two types of OS one is 32-bit and other is 64-bit. But have you ever think about what actually is going on inside these 32-bit and 64-bit systems. As you never experience much difference in them. You can use most of the softwares on both the systems so 32-bit and 64-bit makes no sense to you.

Should you use 32-bit system or 64-bit system?

What version of OS you are using?

You can check your OS version by right-clicking the My Computer in Windows and then click on properties. You will get the version of your OS there.

32-bit 64-bit sytem propertiesFor running 64-bit OS you must have 64-bit compatible processor. But for 32-bit OS you can run it on any of the system i.e. on 32-bit or on 64-bit. Most of modern hardwares are 64-bit compatible.

How much RAM you can use with 32-bit Sytem?

Defnitely for 32-bit sytem there is limit for RAM usage because it can handle only 2^32 bits of memory. It can support 4,294,967,296 bits of memory which is 4096MB in total. So it can only use 4GB of memory.

Some of the modern chips supports Physical Address Extension so that it can use upto 64GB of memory but it require special application for that.

This 4GB problem is not OS specific it is present in all of the OSes i.e in Linux, Mac OSX and Windows.

In Windows due to licensing issue it supports upper limit of 4GB for 32-bit systems.

Problem with video cards

When you install video cards on your windows system then it also acquire your memory so decrease the usable RAM.

What about 64-bit?

Now come to 64-bit system the 64-bit systems support 2^64 bits of memory WOW!! i.e. 17.2 billion GBs 😮 i.e. enough for far future.

Windows Home version is made limited to 16GB of RAM but professional and ultimate versions can use 192GB of RAM !!Mindblowing!! .

So no worry about video cards using memory we have enough memory for system usage.

On 64-bit systems the Virtual memory limit is also increased from 2GB to 8TB so you can do memory rich operation without a glitch.

Your 32-bit apps can run on 64-bit system

For running the 32-bit apps on 64-bit system Windows uses WOW64 which helps the processor to switch between 32-bit and 64-bit modes. But some of the applications which are system specific and Antiviruses must be of 64-bit to work properly.

32-bit 64-bit WOW

You will say 64-bit will use double RAM?

Definitely Not, because for saving the memory pointer takes some more memory but not actually double memory so this is misconception. But your OS size is increased with 64-bit but it is not concerned due to large capacity HDDs.

What now for new system?

If you want to buy new system with 64-bit processor and OS then you should have more RAM because if you install Video Card then you will get out of memory if it is about 4GB. So try out the systems with more RAM and enjoy.
